The purpose of this project was to examine the water quality of the pre-chosen 364 drinking water systems and 38 simple tap-water systems of the 22 municipal counties (or cities). The analytes being tested included heavy metals (As, Pb, Se, Cr, Cd, Ba, Sb, Ni, Hg, Ag, In, Mo, Ga, Tl), volatile organics (trichoroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, vinyl chloride, benzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, 1,1-dichloroethene) and fluoride. In addition, MBAS and THMs were tested for direct drinking water supply systems, thus accounting for a total of 23 to 25 analytes. The analytical results indicated that a part of the analytes were detected in some drinking water supply systems except Ag, In, Ga, Tl, Hg, trichoroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, vinyl chloride, benzene and 1,4-dichlorobenzene, which were found to be not detected or less than the quantitation detection limits (QDL) of the respective analytical methods. A part of the analytes were also quantifiable in some simple tap water systems except Cd, Sb, Ag, In, Ga, Tl, Hg, trichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, vinyl chloride, benzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene and 1,1-dichloroethene. The concentration of arsenic (As) at testing location TTW-J24 in Yun-Lin county and the concentrations of total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) at testing location TTW-T30 of Tai-Tung county and testing location TTW-W04 of Lien-Chiang county did not meet the regulatory limits; all results of the other administrative regions were in compliance with the drinking water quality standards. All analytes met the required drinking water criteria for the tested locations except As and TTHMs, which had passing rates of 99.7% and 99.4%, respectively. The test locations with analytes whose concentration exceeded the drinking water regulatory limits for the first half of 2011 and those with the highest historical results were followed up and re-tested in October this year. The results indicated that all analytes re-tested met the drinking water criteria.
